Writing Examples

One of the qualities of good writing is that the reader can “see” what you are talking about. If the reader can imagine what you were imagining when writing, your opinion will be more convincing. A major way that you can help your reader do this is with examples. In this course, we will practice writing examples of our supporting sentences.

Let’s look at the examples in an essay that we have seen before:

Good Doctors

The sound of an ambulance siren at 3 AM makes everyone stop and think about the fragility of life. In moments of medical crisis, people realize how much they depend on doctors to help them. Every day, millions of people around the world visit doctors for their health problems. When people are sick or hurt, they trust doctors to take care of them and make them feel better. However, not all doctors provide the same quality of care to their patients. Some doctors are more skilled and helpful than others. What makes one doctor better than another doctor? There are many important qualities that good doctors should have to serve patients well. The most important qualities of a good doctor are medical experience and emotional intelligence.

First, medical experience is the foundation of being a good doctor. Supporting Sentence —> To start, doctors must have updated medical knowledge. Example —> For example, a great doctor makes time to read the latest medical research each week. This means that they can help with all types of medical issues, even rare ones. Supporting Sentence —> Additionally, it is important that doctors have strong problem-solving skills. Example —> For instance, they can make quick decisions during emergencies because they have experience in many different situations. Making fast choices ensures that patients get the quickest care when they are in potential danger. In conclusion, an excellent doctor must have adequate experience.

Another important quality for a doctor to have is emotional intelligence. Supporting Sentence —> To begin, it is necessary for doctors to be patient. Example —> As an example, if a patient does not understand their medical condition, the doctor does not rush or complain; instead, they take time to explain every detail. This makes patients feel comfortable and confident about taking care of their condition. Supporting Sentence —> Furthermore, good doctors are always empathetic. Example —> One example is a doctor who takes time to comfort a nervous child during a vaccination. This creates a positive experience for the patient and their family so that they are not afraid to visit the doctor when they need help in the future. To conclude, it is necessary for a doctor to prioritize the emotions of their patients.

Do you see the examples in yellow? They are right after each supporting sentence. There are no formal rules for where to put your examples. I just recommend placing them after each supporting sentence to give you a structure to start with.

Let’s look closely at one of the examples:

Supporting Sentence —> Furthermore, good doctors are always empathetic. Example —> One example is a doctor who takes time to comfort a nervous child during a vaccination.

Here there is a specific example of a doctor being empathetic: comforting a child when giving a vaccination. Hopefully, you could picture this scene; that is our goal. We want our examples to be as specific as possible so that our reader can imagine what we are talking about. This makes our essay both more convincing and entertaining.

Let’s look at an example that would not be the best:

Supporting Sentence —> Furthermore, good doctors are always empathetic. Example —> One example is a doctor who takes time to comfort her patients.

This is not the best example because it is not specific enough. I can’t imagine where the doctor is or what the specific situation is. I do not have a clear picture of the writer’s perspective in my mind.

In this course, writing examples will encourage you to think about your life experiences. I encourage you to paint a clear picture of any scenes you can imagine.
