6.5 Management Advice

A new business will often need help.  The entrepreneur may have no experience in running a business.  They may not have technical skills for building a website or supply chain expertise.  Fortunately, there are several sources for help.

  • Partners – Bringing on a partner can not only bring expertise but also potential funding.
  • Advisory boards – Many cities and counties have advisory boards that look to help small businesses in the community.
  • Consultants – One way to get help is to buy it.  If a web page is needed, hire someone to build it.  Consultants are typically used for one-off projects but can also be used on a continuing basis.  A caveat to the one-off projects – be sure to give thought on how the project will be maintained over time.
  • Small Business Development Centers, SBDC – SBDCs are set up by states to provide support for new and small businesses.  They can provide free advice on the business form, creating a business plan, taxes, insurance, and more.
